Lars Bjerre

Lars Bjerre creates series of richly detailed paintings in large formats. In exhibitions, he often installs them in dialogue with objects that respond to selected elements in the depictions and sometimes recreates them in three dimensions. The artist’s themes vary widely but frequently grow out of episodes in his life and reflect his interest in certain spaces of emotional experience and prototypical genres of storytelling that he picks up on in his narrative environments. His work in painting, which is figurative at heart, revolves around the production of tableaus that evoke a specific atmosphere and mood, gesturing toward forms of human behavior and certain psychological states, which are often associated with isolation. To achieve this effect, he adapts metaphorical representations of man in relation to his fellow human beings and nature, but also dystopian vacant images that preserve only traces of human presence.

The Lumberjack’s hut, a series created in 2011, is one among several works in which Bjerre sketches sceneries of life in the woods. Quoting realistic renditions, the pictures feature hallucinatory and sometimes vaguely menacing elements: a man with a hare’s head dressed in a suit kneels behind a fence topped with an antler (Empty Time); an errant parakeet has alighted in an oak (Dreckspatz); in several pictures, splotches of pink surround the heads of animals and humans (Sparrows and blobs; The blob; When conversation is (made) transparent). Logs, tightly packed or stacked up, and, more prominently, the lonely log cabin appear throughout the series—an installation of the works reiterated both motifs. In other cycles (Snow, 2013, and the works in the exhibition Untitled (Absence), 2012), deer stands hint at the figure of the lurking huntsman waiting for his prey; in one series (Hunter’s Delight, 2012–2013), Bjerre satirized his craving for trophies.
Half-ruined sheds reclaimed by nature—stored tools, old furniture, and other bric-a-brac still recall the absent owners—are another recurrent theme in Bjerre’s art. If I was not afraid, I would go in, a picture from the series of the same title (2013–2014), shows his grandmother’s garden shed; he later built a full-size reconstruction for his exhibition I escaped when the trees started to grow (2015), where the structure appeared side by side with a painting of the old woman’s claustrophobically overstuffed living room—the enormous crab on the dining table is his addition.

Shifting gears, the series The Robbery (2015), which was conceived for an exhibition in London, shows the British crown jewels and the meticulous planning for an attempted heist. No fewer than five men are involved in the undertaking, and one wonders what they think of each other, what drives each of them, and how trust—or dependency—holds the gang together.
The series To walk with slippers made out of magic dough (2016), meanwhile, is based on photographs of various gatherings hosted by the artist’s family: the paintings transmute the protagonists of casual picnics on the lawn and stiff dinners into recollections in trance-like outline, living caricatures or faceless extras, their personalities, interactions, and relationships once again blurred to encourage the viewer to spin out the mysterious stories the depictions evoke.
