Nicolás Rupcich bio

Nicolás Rupcich was born in 1981 in Santiago de Chile. The artists lives and works in Berlin.
Rupcich grew up on the island of Chiloé in the south of Chile and then moved to the capital, Santiago, where he attained both his B.A. and M.A. in the visual arts. In 2012, he went on to acquire a degree as a Meisterschüler in Media Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB), supported by a DAAD scholarship. He has continued to live in Germany since.
He works across a variety of media, focusing mainly on experimental work in photography, video and animation. Thematically, his works explore the functions, effects and behaviours related to the digital image, where what we see on a daily basis as conventions of the screen in fact alters our understanding of reality.
His works have been exhibited in several video and media arts festival and exhibitions, including: Water Light Festival (Brixen, Italy, 2024); Art Speaks Out, ikonoTV – COP27 (Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt 2022); Macro Asilo, Museum of Contemporary Art (Rome, Italy 2018); Video Sur, Palais de Tokyo (Paris, France 2018); Collage I – Methode, Fotogalerie Wien (Vienna, Austria 2017); Pacific Standard Time LA/LA: Video Art in Latin America, LAXART (L.A., USA 2017); Ars Electronica Festival, Best of Animation/Film/VFX, (Linz, Austria 2014); Transmediale, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin, Germany 2012); 28 Kasseler Dokfest (Kassel, Germany 2011); Chili, l’envers du décor, Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton (Paris, France 2010); and the 7º Bienal del Mercosur – Projetáveis (Porto Alegre, Brazil 2009).
Scholarships and awards he has received include: DAAD Scholarship, 2012-2015; First Place in Galería Patricia Ready Photography Prize, 2014; Second Place in FIVA Festival, Buenos Aires, 2015; “Initial" Akademie der Künste scholarship, Berlin, 2021; and Stiftung Kunstfonds - NEUSTARTplus scholarship, 2022.
His work is included in the collections Colección AMA, Sammlung Peters-Messer, Sammlung Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Sachsen and the Hood Museum of Art, among others.
