Manuele Cerutti

In his new canvases Manuele Cerutti puts on display and “questions” everyday, seemingly insignificant items: stones, pieces of wood, bones, and materials from the artist’s archives. By abstracting them from their functional context, he focuses on the formal characteristics and reveals one of the possible original essences of the object as such.
The way these objects are centrally positioned on the canvas against an undefined background, along with their monotone colouring, suggests this repudiation of their functionality. Cerutti ignores context; he provides no information whatsoever about a specific time, a specific place, or scale, and devotes himself to an extensive pictorial examination of the object.
